The Business of Government
Conversations surrounding mental health have grown significantly in recent years, but is America truly in a mental health crisis? In this episode of Weaver: Beyond the Numbers, The Business of Government, Weaver’s Adam Jones and CEO of Metrocare, Dr. John Burruss, explore the realities of mental health today, debunk common myths and discuss how the government plays a critical role in providing mental health services.
Key Points:
- Mental health conditions like anxiety, depression and substance abuse are at crisis levels.
- Social isolation, digital engagement and broader societal issues are fueling the crisis.
- The government plays a crucial role in providing mental health care where private solutions fall short.
Drawing on his substantial experience as a psychiatrist and his tenure at Metrocare, John explains the importance of understanding the key influencers and where decisions come from in public health. He describes the “mental health crisis” as conditions like anxiety and depression, which dramatically escalated during and since the pandemic. In some crisis situations, John notes that meeting immediate physical needs are often prioritized over mental health care. He illustrates this describing his experiences during Hurricane Katrina, as he helped individuals affected by the storm and realized that addressing the mental and emotional trauma of being displaced would become increasingly important.
John also touches on the vital role of the government in health care provision, especially in meeting the needs of marginalized or disadvantaged populations. Moreover, when examining the potential implications of certain proposed federal level changes, John conveys his concerns for the future of Metrocare and the patients they serve. “Mental health care is not a luxury — it’s a necessity. The government must fill the gaps where private solutions fall short,” said John.
Expressing his concerns about the potential budget cuts at the federal level and their consequential impact on mental health care services, John shares his views about the uncertain future. Despite such apprehensions, the spirit of public health persists, which includes meeting the unique needs of each individual under any circumstance.
